The odds of the Stanley Cup returning to Canada for the first time in over two decades remain strong according to the bookmakers at online sportsbook Bodog.
The Montreal Canadiens may have had their winning streak snapped last week, but they are still the Bodog Stanley Cup favorite at +900. For anyone keeping score that’s down from +650.
Even an injury to goalie Carey Price wasn’t enough to knock Montreal off the top spot. His backup, Mike Condon, has looked good in limited action so far, and he hasn’t really had to stand on his head with the Canadiens continuing to be the highest scoring team in the league.
Nipping at Montreal’s heels on the Bodog Stanley Cup futures list are three teams at +1000 – Chicago, Dallas, and the Rangers. Chicago is still off to a slow start with a 6-5 record, but as the reigning Cup champs they’ll continue to get plenty of respect from the oddsmakers.
The Stars are out to prove to everyone that their strong start isn’t a fluke and that they’re a legitimate title contender. Dallas is the top team in the West with 18 points after a 9-2 start, and the Stars may have the most dangerous duo in hockey in Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin. The two atop the NHL scoring race with Benn, last year’s Art Ross Trophy winner, leading the league with 17 points.
The Rangers are also on a nice run right now that nobody is really talking about because it is just expected. New York has won four of its last five and has one of the more balanced offensive attacks in the league.
Now that the Canadiens’ undefeated streak has ended the hottest team in the NHL is the Los Angeles Kings. The Bodog oddsmakers have definitely noticed and have bumped them up to +1100 on the Stanley Cup futures.
A week ago the Kings were +1800. Since then Los Angeles has extended its winning streak to eight games. Jeff Carter has been on fire to start the season and is tied for the league lead with nine goals.
